Gasbes Energy Selected for the Biodiversity Finance Accelerator support programme

Gasbes Energy is a Zambian start-up that was founded in 2017. The company is focused on clean energy, particularly clean cooking. Gasbes energy is one of the 29 biodiversity-positive enterprises from Malawi and Zambia that have been selected to join the 9-month Biodiversity Finance Accelerator (BioFA) support programme to scale its business operations and mobilise investments.

Gasbes Energy was founded in order to empower communities through clean cooking.

Jonathan Lungu, CEO and Founder, explains that Gasbes Energy was founded in order to empower communities through clean cooking. We observed that more than 70 per cent of household energy is utilized for cooking and heating. The unsustainable use of biomass to meet this energy demand is responsible for biodiversity loss caused by deforestation. What we do is help households transition away from biomass-based fuels that encourage deforestation and toward alternatives like biogas produced from farm waste. This transition-through behaviour change has resulted in improved health, particularly for women who spend the majority of their time inhaling toxins from inefficient stoves that burn these fuels.
we are excited to have been selected to take part in the BioFA support programme. and we look forward to learning from other businesses that are strategically positioning themselves for investment mobilization.

The objective of the BioFA acceleration program is to assist the selected businesses with highly interactive capacity-building programs. Throughout the course of the program, the enterprises will strengthen their business models, develop financial plans, and qualify for external financing. In addition, they will participate in networking and peer-learning formats, such as Biodiversity Roundtables, to facilitate cross-sector and multi-stakeholder collaboration.

The BioFA project is implemented by Adelphia leading think-and-do tank for climate, environment, and development, jointly with the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Malawi) and the Women’s Entrepreneurship Access Centre – WEAC (Zambia). This project is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) supported by The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) of Germany.
